High quality scanning, especially from negatives and transparencies (slides), requires high end scanners with a high level "Optical Density" also known as "Dynamic Range". This is most important to faithfully capture the tone or shade differences of the original.
Also a very important requirement is the technology used to detect scratches and dust and carry out repair. Even with the most meticulous cleaning of the scanner's components and the negatives or transparencies, it is impossible to remove all dust which is very noticeable in film scanning.
The award-winning
Digital ICE Technology consists of a special sensor, built in the scanner,
which detects film defects such as cratches, dust and fingerprints. The associated software
repairs the defected areas. The underlying image is not affected, softened
or blurred by this process which would be the case with software-only
